Fund raising - London Marathon
One of the fathers of Kirakira Bunko completed the London Marathon, and we sponsored him.  It has helped Kirakira Bunko and ICBA a great deal financially

Subject: Basic of Story Reading
After the lecture, we had buffet-lunch and a bring-and-buy sale.

Lecturer: Kyoko Sato (former member of Himawari Theatre)
She has become Kubo later.
Subject: How to bring out the power of concentration from children
After the lecture, we learned hands and fingers’ plays.  In addition, she visited our Bunkos while she was staying in London.

Lecturer: Sunao Matsui
Subject: Children Absorb Words
It was the first time for the ICBA UK branch to invite non-ICBA members to the event.  After the lecture, we had a buffet-lunch.  In 1996, we translated the lecture into Japanese and English to be distributed to everyone.

Lecturer: Tomoko Masaoki (Children’s book researcher)
Subject: Study of Picture Books
She talked about reading books to children and read from some books.

Lecturer: Pat Hatchins (Picture book writer)
Subject: Words and Pictures
He talked about the process of writing his picture books by showing his slides and drawings.  He also answered our questions and later visited some of ICBA Bunkos.

Lecturer: Sunao Matsui
Subject: Picture Books – Joy of Words
His wife and Mrs. Yukiko Kobayashi, who was the chairperson of ICBA then, were also present at this lecture.  We invited the people from outside ICBA and had tea together.  The lecture was recorded and translated into Japanese to be distributed to all the Bunkos.

Lecturer: Jan Ormerod (Picture book writer)
Based on his book writing, he talked about his ideas for creating attractive picture books.  After a question-and-answer time, we had homemade buffet-lunch.

Lecturer: Hidekazu Sato (The president of Koguma-sha)
Subject: Listening and Reading - Books widely read
We invited people from outside ICBA to the lecture.  After the lecture, we had a buffet-lunch.  By the request of those who could not attend the lecture, we translated it into Japanese to be distributed to all Bunkos.

ICBA 20-year celebration of its founding
Lecturer: Kazuko Takeda (Illustrator)
Subject: Britain, Japan and Me
Ms Takeda, who illustrated for Her Majesty the Empress Michiko’s book “Hajimete no yamanobori”, visited London for her exhibition and visited ICBA.

ICBA 20-year celebration of its founding (Cecil Sharp House)
After each Bunko performed on the stage, we all sang Japanese songs with Marii chan, who is very popular in the NHK TV programme “Eigo de asobou”.  We invited many people who support ICBA to this celebration.
1999-2000
ICBA video for 20-year celebration of its founding
Together with ICBA Headquarters in Japan, we made a video that contains information about ICBA philosophy, purpose, history, and activities.  Ms Hisae Nakajima, who is a popular producer of documentary movies and professional videos in Japan, helped to make both the Japanese version and the English version.

Subject: Toy Books - Victorian Picture Books
She brought many valuable Victorian picture books with her and talked about her doctorial dissertation “Victorian Picture Books”.  After the lecture, we had a delightful conversation and refreshments.

With the support from the Japanese Embassy, we showed the English version of our video in the embassy ballroom to the people who are interested in our ICBA Bunko activities, including British people from various educational fields.

Lecturer: Satoshi Kitamura (Picture book writer)
Subject: From Sketches to Finished Picture Book -Behind Picture Book Writing
Famous for his picture books, “Boku wa okotta” and “Hituji no kooto wa dokoitta”, Mr. Kitamura talked about the writing process of his picture books.  After the lecture, we had a buffet-lunch and a pleasant chat with him.

Lecturers: Satoshi Kitamura and Nick Tucker
Mr. Kitamura talked about his picture book writing and showed some picture theatres.  Mr. Tucker talked about the importance of books for children.

Get-together concert (at Victoria Hall in Ealing Town Hall)
Celebrating the support we receive from Itocyu Kinen Foundation, we had an open concert of “Joji Hirota and Friends” with Japanese musical instruments.
